Painting Numbers

Fragment 58, another painting in the typography series, features partial views of numbers. It is painted in acrylics on canvas board.

In reds, pinks and purples, it's a departure color wise from the other pieces in the series. It's also slightly larger at 6 X 8 inches.

Signage continues to be culturally important. This painting seeks to highlight the beautiful curves and lines found in ordinary numbers and letters.

Stirred by the Wind

Gust 3.5 X 3.5 inches. A mini landscape art quilt inspired by a few blustery days of very strong wind.

It's a mixed fiber piece of hand stitched embroidery and needle felting.

Weathered Signs

Timeworn (Q) 5 X 5 X 1/2 inches. Acrylic on wood.

Inspired by aged and rusted materials, Timeworn (Q) is another in the typography series that features numbers and letters. The series explores weathering, signage and 20th century consumer advertising.

On the Work Table

A few projects, all in progress.
1) A colorful stitched owl, the focus piece of an art quilt that will incorporate hand embroidery, machine stitching, painted fabric and text.
Another part of the owl quilt featuring Pekingese stitch (aka Chinese Stitch).
2) A small collage of text and music, machine stitched together.
3) And a tiny front door with the beginnings of a garden in embroidery on felt.

The Dictionary & Stitch

Red Umbrella is hand embroidered in black on a vintage dictionary page.

Stitching on paper is a tricky process. Paper tears easily when poked with a needle and pulled taut with thread. The extra thin pages of a dictionary provide an extra challenge.
Dictionary Embroidery, Letter M
With these pieces, several thin layers of sealant are applied and allowed to fully dry before beginning to stitch, resulting in a surface more able to withstand poking, piercing and crafty goodness.

Thumbs Up

Signals 10 X 10 X 1 1/2 inches.

How to describe this piece? Mixed Media. Paint and Stitch on canvas. And perhaps best described as Bricolage which is a collage created from a variety of things.

Hand Embroidery, fabric and a book page is added to painted canvas, combining my passions for both paint and stitch.

After all, canvas is a fabric so stitching is fair game. Thumbs up to that.

The Secret Lives of Mice

Daisy is a brown mouse sitting on a play block.
She is a soft sculpture with green eyes and extra large lavender ears.
The block she sits on is just the right size for her bottom. But she's not sensitive about it at all. She says her bum is just right.  Below her curly tail is a red number 6 (which also happens to be her dress size).
And on the front of the block is a green number 2 (which also happens to be the dress size she says she is...).
No matter her dress size, Daisy Mouse is small and her big ears mean she hears everything and makes a great watch-mouse.
Emmett is a grey mouse sitting on a blue number 5 play block.
The back of his block is a yellow number 1.
His body is a lovely blueish grey and his ears are antique white. He's a quiet little guy and a great listener.
Emmett likes classical music and show tunes. And David Bowie. He loves it when the volume is cranked up high.

A Mouse in the House

A few mice have crept into the birdhouse studio.
Violet Mouse Hand Embroidery on natural cotton.

Violet is based on a sketch of mine and is stitched in three shades of antique violet with a few touches of pale pink on the ear and nose.
And this is Oswald Mouse, a soft sculpture.
He is 4 inches tall, thanks to his enormous ears. He's also based on a sketch.

There are a few more mice waiting to show their faces. Over the next few days they will be ready to pose for the camera :)

Slight Detour

Forecast 6 X 8 inches. Mixed Media on wood.

A diversion of collage painting in the midst of all the stitching & stuffing still in the works.

Forecast is inspired by maps, meteorology & the changeable February weather.

But Spring is coming!
