Three new abstract paintings in acrylic to share. Each painting has multiple layers of color creating an impression of nature. <i>Lush</i>, is the largest of the grouping at 16 X 20 inches, inspired by wildflowers in the summer. Several shades of blue interact with purples and reds creating the abstract floral.<br />

<i>Crossed Lines </i>is a mini abstract at 4 X 4 inches. It's a color study looking at the play between orange, red and purple, each color layered over the other, blending and blurring the lines.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxVwHZm6vsQPYIqj_LFCxa_NCiL5gtStnvdjDi6ResI1tMz6epPoysD2EXIVtJBVmKOf-tNafpCj2_yHjbpj36aiFw4Fwg3bPEyVu8RALZuyupKtwqD0UxqUKcfNoDoIGU0szKICkm3YI/s1600/rain-abstract-2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxVwHZm6vsQPYIqj_LFCxa_NCiL5gtStnvdjDi6ResI1tMz6epPoysD2EXIVtJBVmKOf-tNafpCj2_yHjbpj36aiFw4Fwg3bPEyVu8RALZuyupKtwqD0UxqUKcfNoDoIGU0szKICkm3YI/s640/rain-abstract-2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
Another mini painting, <i>Rainy Night,</i> plays with color and line and the movement those lines create.<br />
<br />
While each new painting is quite different, they share the process of using a palette knife to mix and move the color around the surface, layering one color over the other until finally finding their shape.<br />

If you knit or crochet, how big is your yarn stash? Mine is slowly becoming smaller as I keep making Granny Squares.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Ideal for using up scraps of yarn, Grannies are quick and creative. My pile of squares is growing. What will happen with all these disparate squares? Eventually they will become blankets and throws, but for now, they are a beautiful stacked Granny Flower Garden.<br />

A sweet little blackbird created in free-motion machine stitch acts as a central figure in this art quilt. A colourful patchwork background in blue, teal, pink, orange and yellow is covered with lace and frayed cheesecloth (some of which is cut away) and embellished with hand embroidery stitches and buttons.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
When creating a granny square project in crochet, choosing colors can be a real challenge. Finding just the right shades to coordinate and compliment each other is an art in itself. In creating this throw blanket, my first color choice was the deep purple shade that would surround and highlight the daisy-like flowers. </div>
<a name='more'></a><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2a8MY-MMsihPXh1acsT56_NLeDBo4jSTInCY6qJIu1GE9hIDSC-Nddw63RCI13qzspYKnQQtYsCSBEeXxQZKJ5Lqy2muxwSmJ-vqHTXVYuzQxyjOdJJC-WL19B6BvFSCAzTVJib119Zc/s1600/crochet-purple-grannies1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2a8MY-MMsihPXh1acsT56_NLeDBo4jSTInCY6qJIu1GE9hIDSC-Nddw63RCI13qzspYKnQQtYsCSBEeXxQZKJ5Lqy2muxwSmJ-vqHTXVYuzQxyjOdJJC-WL19B6BvFSCAzTVJib119Zc/s640/crochet-purple-grannies1.jpg" width="640" /></a>
The rich purple of this yarn reminded me of the black yarn that has traditionally been used as a background for granny blankets, but with a fun modern twist. The white of the daisies and the white yarn bordering the squares when joined is an example of contrasting dark and light colors, which is one way to approach color choice in crochet.</div>

In crocheting <a href="http://www.peaceofpistudio.com/2015/03/crochet-granny-square-flower-afghan.html" style="text-align: center;" target="_blank">my first granny blanket</a><span style="text-align: center;"> with this flower motif, medium and dark shades of teal yarn were my first color decisions. Every color I chose after that had to match (to my eye) the turquoise shades. This is another way to make color choices - choose one color as a starting point or main color. Each subsequent color must match the main color. This will result in an overall well matched, well balanced finished project. </span><br />
<span style="text-align: center;"><br /></span>
<span style="text-align: center;">For this throw, choosing white to connect the grannies join-as-you-go style lightened and brightened the blanket, and white yarn was already part of the original granny square so it was sure to unify the blanket. (see more about this granny blanket <a href="http://www.peaceofpistudio.com/2015/03/crochet-granny-square-flower-afghan.html" target="_blank">in this post</a>).</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFM2z5FtkslJEngCWqO_cV0WLGMfxmh24HE4ClfzfiokWoR3AnvbyrjY10jwvaexFQdLVI8U2KcuaRqi-RjmPHdDKwI2DlUuWHk2LbkVog_UOPhntlGgqVxeDHtpYtJ7KRjqv1y_H9_wE/s1600/pink-granny-square.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFM2z5FtkslJEngCWqO_cV0WLGMfxmh24HE4ClfzfiokWoR3AnvbyrjY10jwvaexFQdLVI8U2KcuaRqi-RjmPHdDKwI2DlUuWHk2LbkVog_UOPhntlGgqVxeDHtpYtJ7KRjqv1y_H9_wE/s640/pink-granny-square.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
One of the nice things about color choice for granny squares is that it only takes a small amount of yarn to test color combinations. For example, with this pink granny, I was testing how the coral shade of pink looked beside the bright orange yarn. There isn't very much contrast between these colors. Would the colors blend, clash, disappear or pop? The result, I think, is a VERY bright cheerful square, with the colors blending nicely.<br />
<br />
Here's a tip: Colors that are opposite on the color wheel really pop when placed side by side while colors beside each other on the color wheel tend to blend more harmoniously. Either choice is good, just experiment and see what you like. Don't be afraid to use a color wheel to help make yarn choices. A small one is all you need.<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBenwHgVLwwFT1R9GYKRR3SjepCKemlrEzw4bGgGu6zIc_YCiNASE553apbCzNQwJ8FEy3yCWrM3irBEn_pxTszuxPQqPLUEyorPmMK5zxtp6IJNiNUB6SynuOgsFmi8LyqVKEGzlxGEQ/s1600/turquoise-granny.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBenwHgVLwwFT1R9GYKRR3SjepCKemlrEzw4bGgGu6zIc_YCiNASE553apbCzNQwJ8FEy3yCWrM3irBEn_pxTszuxPQqPLUEyorPmMK5zxtp6IJNiNUB6SynuOgsFmi8LyqVKEGzlxGEQ/s640/turquoise-granny.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
The flower granny in all these examples is a favourite of mine called the Little Circle Square. The pattern can be found over on crocheter Kate's blog <a href="http://signedwithanowl.blogspot.ca/2011/09/little-circle-square-tutorial.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">here</a>. I have made this granny over and over. Here I used two rounds of dark teal yarn. This is another striking color combination where the lightness of the white is contrasted with the deep dark shade of teal, making the daisy motif stand out.<br />
<br />
Experimentation is a great way to find color combinations that really sing and granny squares are a great place for the crocheter to try color combinations out. Along with inspiration and advice from the experts in books like <a href="https://www.bookdepository.com/Crochet-with-Color-Violet-Henderson/9781974005123?ref=grid-view&qid=1532984559519&sr=1-1/?a_aid=pps314" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Crochet with Color</a> any crocheter can make a stunning colorful project.<br />

These paintings are small works, with focus on color play and tonal interest, where every detail matters. I've found that there is always more to learn when exploring color, and it keeps me working and playing and painting!<br />

I continue to explore the abstract landscape with four new paintings, all in acrylic on canvas. At 16 X 20 inches, <i>Glade </i>is the largest in this grouping. Using these vibrant colours was both exciting and challenging.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQgoMJeKB2Y6522bJFk85dcMqLPF7zmKNMwY0j2N5YJe2RfiUnnyL4fDAZZncbnO8N2CBx-pBEreDepndms1GByGjHK-JB4SJweLyb2bSMN2LBRhNdARAcsH1ovTHOOAEFk93kv4ZZ314/s1600/Comfort-Abstract-Painting.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQgoMJeKB2Y6522bJFk85dcMqLPF7zmKNMwY0j2N5YJe2RfiUnnyL4fDAZZncbnO8N2CBx-pBEreDepndms1GByGjHK-JB4SJweLyb2bSMN2LBRhNdARAcsH1ovTHOOAEFk93kv4ZZ314/s640/Comfort-Abstract-Painting.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
The next three paintings are all 6 X 6 inches. <i>Comfort of a Rainy Day</i> uses rich wet greens.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi73M4Cr3aYjZjjer5rS-JLFMOSLDmyoMZ3yJ7O1U0ie49m5Lrf5M6IdzaQKmcqHE9AbFSVKMMH9Zg5NsRrda_2rzsdH1ekXh50HrSjtUcAdTAeOY3hLEK5pcceJsxUaJx-nEfOJB8_4bI/s1600/Reflection-Abstract-painting.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi73M4Cr3aYjZjjer5rS-JLFMOSLDmyoMZ3yJ7O1U0ie49m5Lrf5M6IdzaQKmcqHE9AbFSVKMMH9Zg5NsRrda_2rzsdH1ekXh50HrSjtUcAdTAeOY3hLEK5pcceJsxUaJx-nEfOJB8_4bI/s640/Reflection-Abstract-painting.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
While <i>Reflection</i> relies on turquoise with orange-red for calm yet energetic contrast.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHSnzy1rBDq5_8mPJ5eUp36-dDEH3JUl1_XcsrQ-bHr6das5-0s27e8Mq6QKVMB9dgENxreZa7HqdOXaXPvZ3HX00naJP2ne8OcJZ7IZttwvCjyZvV6OQK73OMlrpBBj6VevPavmH3JSY/s1600/Purple-Abstract-Painting.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHSnzy1rBDq5_8mPJ5eUp36-dDEH3JUl1_XcsrQ-bHr6das5-0s27e8Mq6QKVMB9dgENxreZa7HqdOXaXPvZ3HX00naJP2ne8OcJZ7IZttwvCjyZvV6OQK73OMlrpBBj6VevPavmH3JSY/s640/Purple-Abstract-Painting.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
And lastly, <i>Ready to Climb the Hill </i>has purples and blues for a cheerful breezy mood. More paintings are in the works, all inspired by nature, the outdoors and the changing of the seasons.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Three new semi abstract paintings inspired by flowers, specifically wildflowers that grow untamed in both rural and urban settings:<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJGOepkiYTMASZtzpahe6-4BLbAb6XriltGsQOWdJIorClZ9Qng1TbbLyRj0YrXyT59lAIkg5KAMPMZd9aRlbmk4rKvf2Zs_RAC1W6AhyaLZJRYhzB0MpCuxg6-IbaLZPFf8amC_GJMcg/s1600/Floral-Mixed-Media.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJGOepkiYTMASZtzpahe6-4BLbAb6XriltGsQOWdJIorClZ9Qng1TbbLyRj0YrXyT59lAIkg5KAMPMZd9aRlbmk4rKvf2Zs_RAC1W6AhyaLZJRYhzB0MpCuxg6-IbaLZPFf8amC_GJMcg/s640/Floral-Mixed-Media.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<i>Motet</i>, is a mixed media piece, 6 X 8 inches, created primarily in acrylic. It has so much texture which adds a wonderful grunge-y feel. And, this painting became the jumping off point for a new delicate floral pattern available from <a href="https://www.redbubble.com/people/peaceofpistudio/works/28309799-serenity-garden">as a scarf</a>:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.redbubble.com/people/peaceofpistudio/works/28309799-serenity-garden" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1448" data-original-width="1448" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgiagbWr9O9qzitkoyPJnx5efyTsDhpM5PlIf8P2QU5pYi3woIvJZVOFJAUl434xpwmJ7ABE2Y4poEQGou7GcYyCt3g5MhjqRv_CoUNA3-Cw_AiHBqIPjMPfbwZbcZ4cwqSUEWmDweXW4Q/s640/Motet-Scarf.png" width="640" /></a></div>
<a href="https://www.redbubble.com/people/peaceofpistudio/works/28309799-serenity-garden">Serenity Garden</a> has a muted, faded background punctuated by bold blossoms in various shades of purple. Click the image to see this pattern and scroll down to see it on tote bags, mugs, pillows and more.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFbTBPimsvdlMDFQS4vS_A1DtJi_Nrnfsvqk2GWyUhDo8I4-_dSpmhXAKJeGIgX416fxeaHTv-gavfACB0NW8vgO3PLd0hi_5Pdbh0SYmu9jb1_0trQQEOm1oDFM5QQMaLvCz5jP27agI/s1600/Flowers-Concrete-Painting.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFbTBPimsvdlMDFQS4vS_A1DtJi_Nrnfsvqk2GWyUhDo8I4-_dSpmhXAKJeGIgX416fxeaHTv-gavfACB0NW8vgO3PLd0hi_5Pdbh0SYmu9jb1_0trQQEOm1oDFM5QQMaLvCz5jP27agI/s640/Flowers-Concrete-Painting.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
This next floral is less abstract but still fairly loose. <i>Growing from a Crack in the Concrete </i>is 12 X 12 inches, created using multiple layers of acrylic paint on heavy wood. The painting has a very matte finish which adds an aged and weathered quality.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8fgglrT7Oswqv48-6Ng_Nrq9RdoJgfUjnyxtjJoM79rY9E5GUuVK5YPgdO2shHCDE_t3n-Bqz2xATG-TlRdDYUkrOWs3yEd7q8vvILiM1VbkphtKnny9wqN87oC_W1zIj6pSO0-IWJtA/s1600/Purple-Abstract-Painting.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8fgglrT7Oswqv48-6Ng_Nrq9RdoJgfUjnyxtjJoM79rY9E5GUuVK5YPgdO2shHCDE_t3n-Bqz2xATG-TlRdDYUkrOWs3yEd7q8vvILiM1VbkphtKnny9wqN87oC_W1zIj6pSO0-IWJtA/s640/Purple-Abstract-Painting.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
Add finally, <i>Ready to Climb the Hill</i>, is 6 X 6 inches in soft glossy acrylic on canvas. The semi-gloss finish gets picked up by the light adding a nice shine to this cheerful abstract.<br />

Three new abstract paintings, from mid-size to small, each inspired by peaceful walks in the woods and the calm to be found in nature.<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrawd54YXv_AUG_TSHVwtjHcU4_Ig8xjeAAmCmEBt-kHXbp4FK0fvytRgAj2k56w5oTFkQ34vet0GIm2F6Byg4Nh4UCGv44cw4d-6Nv5ixSLGQZ25iEScKh5ew2gmx9NRVkvI2WPblhVg/s1600/evening-glade-painting.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="1000" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrawd54YXv_AUG_TSHVwtjHcU4_Ig8xjeAAmCmEBt-kHXbp4FK0fvytRgAj2k56w5oTFkQ34vet0GIm2F6Byg4Nh4UCGv44cw4d-6Nv5ixSLGQZ25iEScKh5ew2gmx9NRVkvI2WPblhVg/s640/evening-glade-painting.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<i>Evening Glade,</i> 12 X 12 inches in acrylic on canvas, is a semi-abstract painting inspired by tall ancient trees.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVU3hhyHhJQp2PgrOp4Is9UoCBXsDxZChMWL1orrLPRN5cw-jwH4nuI7ISl5hvhd9jmMxAp6KBb6DRhitz9uU7UoCNRKjAl5DIQZgeHyF4-XDbLZf2tIR1uJCq4ekggDIuTJgU9hpAJNg/s1600/restored-abstract-painting-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="1000" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVU3hhyHhJQp2PgrOp4Is9UoCBXsDxZChMWL1orrLPRN5cw-jwH4nuI7ISl5hvhd9jmMxAp6KBb6DRhitz9uU7UoCNRKjAl5DIQZgeHyF4-XDbLZf2tIR1uJCq4ekggDIuTJgU9hpAJNg/s640/restored-abstract-painting-1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<i>Restored</i>, 8 X 8 inches in acrylic on wood panel is another abstract inspired by trees and flowers.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiP-94hTzkdmgEAKHJ1ErPglMoVZc6gkYzRrmnTayo2sSVFStndPGGMeV_Y27DzEwDWvbBgQr80XA2muPpXEuj7Vpqd7CO4XxmOEOZnGhP7BLTNcR1rrQbm1iRP9VxZpBkGEDhdKG6LNG8/s1600/Navigator-Abstract-Painting.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="1000" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiP-94hTzkdmgEAKHJ1ErPglMoVZc6gkYzRrmnTayo2sSVFStndPGGMeV_Y27DzEwDWvbBgQr80XA2muPpXEuj7Vpqd7CO4XxmOEOZnGhP7BLTNcR1rrQbm1iRP9VxZpBkGEDhdKG6LNG8/s640/Navigator-Abstract-Painting.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<i>Navigator</i>, 6 X 6 inches in acrylic on wood is inspired by one of my favourite things - the drizzle of a rainy day.<br />
<br />
Here's to the wonder and sacred nature of tall trees and crisp Autumn weather.<br />

A peek inside my art journal shows what's on my mind. Birds. No Surprise!<br />
<br />
Have a look at five pages from my mixed media journal followed by details on how they were created. I've also included some <b>book recommendations </b>at the end of this post for learning or improving doodle-y sketchy paint-y skills.<br />

And finally, these penguins are surely feeling the love. Awww.<br />
<br />
Each of these sketchy paintings were "found" on a background randomly applied paint. A pencil found the shapes and the addition of paint refined the details. Each painting has a bit of text added on the left as a kind of caption for the drawing.<br />

The first painting of the set is in landscape orientation. Both pieces are in shades of blue, from deep midnight and cyan to greener turquoise with hints of red and orange peeking through.<br />

The second painting, that will hang to the left of the first, is in portrait orientation. Are the touches of red and orange hinting at a lush garden?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Here they are together. The paintings are medium sized at 16 X 20 inches. When hung together, a few inches apart, the set measures about 40 X 20 inches.<br />

The grid design of the stitching created little boxes for embellishment, including hand beaded details and touches of hand embroidery. The addition of buttons added a homey touch to yet another stitched collage featuring crows. There's so much more to explore, and another mixed media quilt is in the works now. Stay tuned.</div>

Take a peek at a few doodles in my recycled book journal. Folk Art Birds are appearing out of the layers of colourful paint. On this first page, pink birds are hitching a ride on the biggest of the flock.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgscExtE0NxYVWqwntIZU_0AiHVQ7UNsTTCQwyaX2rnLQphPW_pyOmhKxzeOSAiM81RbE8AglUL6EJ1mwcpaYLHoih43l06Qg-hmOH5StdWFuX-sJpu37c8YJOPf8h28WgNg1TPefMhtrQ/s1600/blue-bird-doodle1.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="638" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgscExtE0NxYVWqwntIZU_0AiHVQ7UNsTTCQwyaX2rnLQphPW_pyOmhKxzeOSAiM81RbE8AglUL6EJ1mwcpaYLHoih43l06Qg-hmOH5StdWFuX-sJpu37c8YJOPf8h28WgNg1TPefMhtrQ/s640/blue-bird-doodle1.PNG" width="640" /></a></div>
And on this page, a lone bluebird looks fairly satisfied about something...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuhhow2fOeE4bFcJ9DOgzRjag1bGrMUtR_SvoWNFflQdywsAMapsrxsqtGmJhU_2FcxXoBuugv-kmXP4fF6KdHCqzZoWKdZkHofJd4DU7nAlSENEw4Cak6SJeNg638B8C6iZVFHDLyI8Y/s1600/bluebird-doodle2.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuhhow2fOeE4bFcJ9DOgzRjag1bGrMUtR_SvoWNFflQdywsAMapsrxsqtGmJhU_2FcxXoBuugv-kmXP4fF6KdHCqzZoWKdZkHofJd4DU7nAlSENEw4Cak6SJeNg638B8C6iZVFHDLyI8Y/s640/bluebird-doodle2.PNG" width="640" /></a></div>
Wonder what the story is behind that smile and the twinkle in his eye.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMYXuvHxia6f2htgttbeVmRhWfSe3OHATpE76Qk2Ci8pj7hFBlzcgwDQC1w6Ou5aR3RJp6y3iMB8hqAkltwo9Tjwm_-w2FCqxgdUhzQhEYtERGMTd-pB1z0zAjjIfNAHyXpIqJ-YR7CCY/s1600/Bird-Doodles.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMYXuvHxia6f2htgttbeVmRhWfSe3OHATpE76Qk2Ci8pj7hFBlzcgwDQC1w6Ou5aR3RJp6y3iMB8hqAkltwo9Tjwm_-w2FCqxgdUhzQhEYtERGMTd-pB1z0zAjjIfNAHyXpIqJ-YR7CCY/s640/Bird-Doodles.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>

<i>Burd</i> is a soft sculpture with frayed fabric feathers. Simple hand sewing stitches secure each piece of tiny fabric in place and layers of uneven stitches round and round make the skinny fuchsia bird legs.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5N4z0OWBVBQAAavOA4fV908kqF7fenb9IWpvXkOEZ-CD1xr9YPIe8gNOI1VInL4S6XPEW23IG70fWwQUXZYO4vC5n9U7l5kc3fpFjIGNFxrkH5QLx_1RubLXfI-jisUf5RO3esMz4MD0/s1600/Frayed-Bird-Softie-2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="1000" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5N4z0OWBVBQAAavOA4fV908kqF7fenb9IWpvXkOEZ-CD1xr9YPIe8gNOI1VInL4S6XPEW23IG70fWwQUXZYO4vC5n9U7l5kc3fpFjIGNFxrkH5QLx_1RubLXfI-jisUf5RO3esMz4MD0/s640/Frayed-Bird-Softie-2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
Her sunny yellow body and pale yellow chest are accented by a bold fuchsia blaze running from the top of her bird head to the tip of her tail. Bits of bright turquoise fabric feathers appear on her tail and vintage floral fabric in yellow makes up her wing. Completing all the hand sewing on this softie bird was time intensive in the extreme, with joy in every stitch!<br />

<i>Solstice</i> is an abstract stitched landscape combining silk, ribbon and lace. With beautiful frayed edges of silk, the art quilt is embellished with hand beading. The colours are bright and sunny with touches of green for growth and life. It's part of the ongoing <a href="http://www.peaceofpistudio.com/search/label/Silk%20Threads%20Series">Silk Thread Series</a>.<br />

For this Fiber Art Quilt, <i>Viewpoint</i>, torn and frayed strips of Sari Silk made a colorful background for hand beading. It is part of an ongoing <a href="http://www.peaceofpistudio.com/search/label/Silk%20Threads%20Series">series</a>, exploring silk fabrics, creative stitching and beads.<br />

In the bottom right of this close up, a bit of embroidery original to the sari silk was preserved to add texture and color.<br />

Covered in simple hand embroidery stitches with outlining marks in black thread, this art quilt makes a cheerful statement. Created using torn pieces of fabric in bold solid colors, the piece is titled <i>ça me rappelle Matisse </i>because it reminds me of the cut-outs created by artist Henri Matisse (1869-1954).<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzKwzYiduQizD8pp2ooi_t86av4TBq7eOrIi3fLNq1oz8FXLpJCnjUvaSav3SjwdXWOxrzG0FxCKy4Z_efpccvbfPCTDPFRRkbekWNokf0c2heVlMZdCtzhcZd3sbz5_0TGNCzIO7i28c/s1600/Stitched-Collage-Matisse-Closeup-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="1000" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzKwzYiduQizD8pp2ooi_t86av4TBq7eOrIi3fLNq1oz8FXLpJCnjUvaSav3SjwdXWOxrzG0FxCKy4Z_efpccvbfPCTDPFRRkbekWNokf0c2heVlMZdCtzhcZd3sbz5_0TGNCzIO7i28c/s400/Stitched-Collage-Matisse-Closeup-1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
It was not my initial intention. In fact it was only after stepping back to look at the initial stages of the collage that it occurred to me - the brightly colored fabrics on the black background have a similar feel to his bold paper collage pieces.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioR3ZjY9XP9QhgFv_YpgzozUjk4c0Hq6tXy-3wvylS1FzfAkpZqi3z07s8NG9YewRFzAV4354_ANxNBSDuAKXqBk80tjksGUAaIMyW0qodDtWD13GWlomDz0poDjP15iRgzQ2JgMjB3bc/s1600/stitched-collage-matisse-closeup2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="1000" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioR3ZjY9XP9QhgFv_YpgzozUjk4c0Hq6tXy-3wvylS1FzfAkpZqi3z07s8NG9YewRFzAV4354_ANxNBSDuAKXqBk80tjksGUAaIMyW0qodDtWD13GWlomDz0poDjP15iRgzQ2JgMjB3bc/s400/stitched-collage-matisse-closeup2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
While the Matisse cut-outs have shapes with crisp edges, my piece has frayed and unraveled edges highlighting the medium - soft fabric and thread. The long and short lines of embroidery further emphasize that this is a textile work - more domestic and homey than high art, which sounds perfect to me.<br />
<br />
Want more Matisse? There are some great <a href="https://www.bookdepository.com/search?searchTerm=matisse&search=Find+book">books</a> on his life and art. First off for the die-hard, the comprehensive volume, <a href="https://www.bookdepository.com/Henri-Matisse-The-Cut-Outs-Henri-Matisse/9780870709159/?a_aid=pps314">Henri Matisse: The Cut-Outs</a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.bookdepository.com/Henri-Matisse-The-Cut-Outs-Henri-Matisse/9780870709159/?a_aid=pps314" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="750" data-original-width="626" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1BKZ3_Dy9gMVYRuWzA1-iqdWbKQ0hXl7bwUCnEvix2mjc0ds8fXGoz_GWsbmCzzY_nUd7LQnsvaBUpQGdBnOlj9jANCAkEx0FMnEemf5xv-Ln5JmFhIUa8ZKhN-THKEh0QrSRkgILbus/s320/matisse-cut-outs.png" width="267" /></a></div>
From the description, "[this] catalogue offers a reconsideration of the cut-outs by exploring a host of technical and conceptual issues: the artist's methods and materials and the role and function of the works in his practice..." And on a more hands-on note:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.bookdepository.com/Colour-Your-Own-Matisse-Paintings-Matisse/9780486400303/?a_aid=pps314" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="768" data-original-width="604" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWGRfQbLQca7MUpH35ncpfWbNdFc8bwu1brzIBluP8gymq_lOCuaW_dGGloq_DR9CgpzsQjsmk6jIv_VkiEraK0yDItO4vFSQawEG0pRbX0VXcfHhIRjH7bWpsMUBROH0PVSiMufxOckg/s320/color+your+own+matisse.png" width="251" /></a></div>
A hardcover coloring book, <a href="https://www.bookdepository.com/Colour-Your-Own-Matisse-Paintings-Matisse/9780486400303/?a_aid=pps314">Color Your Own Matisse Paintings</a> offers a playful opportunity to try on your own Matisse. It has 30 of his pieces in black and white to color in. Fun!<br />
<br />
While my humble stitchery merely nods to Matissse, it shows how his work still ignites the imagination.<br />
