Gray Catbird Raw Edge Stitched Picture

A transparent gray catbird is portrayed in this stitched picture. Akin to sketching in an art journal, a fabric picture can come to life by laying down strips of torn fabric and then stitching and sketching with a sewing machine. In this piece the variegated threads add colour and the raw edges of the fabric, free to fray and unravel, add texture. And similar to a paper journal, journal quilting is an excellent process for playing, meditating and working out ideas.

Red-Winged Blackbird Stitched Mixed Media Art

In a beautiful sequence of events, this artwork came to life. Torn book pages were adhered to painted fabric. The bird was sketched onto the surface (what is it...crow, thrush...?) quickly showing itself to be a red-winged blackbird. Ok. Stitching, defining, refining. Almost complete. Break. A trip to meet friends outdoors. An urban space. Concrete. And suddenly there it was - small, beautiful and almost tame. A passerine bird of the family Icteridae, a red-winged blackbird landed inches away from my feet, spent a moment or two looking around and then flew away. Beautiful. Peaceful. Mysterious. Created in layers of mixed media - painted fabric, book pages, stitch, embroidery and beading, this piece, titled Serendipity, is an example of art connecting with the everyday.

Sewing Kilt Pin Fabric Brooches with Crows

Two more stitched collage brooches featuring birds. A crow on teal, turquoise and orange,
and a crow on a painted fabric background in oranges and ochres. Both are topped with kilt pins for pinning onto a jacket or bag, or even to be hung on a wall with the help of a nail -
These brooches can be found in my shop.

Kilt Pin Fabric Bird Brooches

Working on a few of these stitched collage artworks. First, a blackbird surrounded by hand embroidery and beads on a rainy day.
And this is a pink pigeon perched in a leafy tree. Topped with a kilt pin, these fabric pieces can be worn as a brooch, pinned onto bag or hung and displayed on a wall by aid of a nail. Check them our in my shop.

Magpie Fabric Collage Bird Art Quilt

A majestic black and white bird is the central figure of this art quilt. The background is a collage of fabric in yellow and earthy browns with some torn book pages. The quilting lines form a grid to highlight the bird, a proud and confident Magpie. The bird's long tail extends past the edges of the quilt, further highlighting the strong presence of the magpie, the hero of this birdie snapshot.

Red-Winged Blackbird Stitched Collage Art Quilt

This stitched collage, the breeze, is an art quilt in shades of orange, peach and golden yellow featuring a red-winged blackbird. The bird is perched on a branch with book page leaves. He is surrounded by fabric and fibers - the various bits of ephemera making up the collage that serves as this sweet bird's breezy habitat.
