Blue Bird Red Bird

One in turquoise blue, one in deep red, these monochromatic fabric birds are two of a kind. Stitched and embroidered by hand, they are stuffed until beautifully plump.

At about 3 1/2 inches tall and 5 1/2 inches long, they are a mated for life pair, the best of friends.

Soft Fabric Bird

Perched on my painting table is a new stitched bird soft sculpture. His name is Mister J.
Made of fabric with hand embroidery stitches in topaz, copper and ecru, Mr. J is 5 1/2 inches long and 4 inches tall. Here he is braving the wet weather for a quick snapshot.

Hand Stitched Lavender Bird

Doing Nothing

A bit of Latin: nihil agere delectat - It is pleasant to do nothing.

Painting in acrylic with hand embroidery lettering, 8 X 10 inches on canvas.

From Painting to Art Quilt

Galactic art quilt (16 X 16 inches) is inspired by my abstract paintings. The challenge was to translate the texture and lines that can be achieved in acrylic paint to soft fabrics and machine stitch.

The base fabric is batik with three additional layers of hand painted fabric. The aim was to create depth & texture with raw unraveling edges, meandering stitches and couched lines. The addition of the roundness of tortoiseshell buttons and tiger's eye beads was a balancing counterpoint to the raw edge cutwork of the lines.

As an exploration of surface design and a rendering of acrylic painting to fabric art, this was a fantastic, fun & interesting challenge.
